Cross country: Dragons dominate Marcus I Invitational

District 5-5A cross country programs got a look at what they will be facing when the district meet takes place from North Lakes Park in Denton in late October when they competed in the Marcus I Invitational on the same course last Saturday.
The meet featured every program that reached the Region I Meet last season, as well as all six 5-5A members.
Stealing the show, however, was District 4-5A member Southlake Carroll.
The Dragons finished first as a team on the boys side (19) and also claimed the top spot on the girls side (52). Keller Timber Creek finished second in boys (126) ahead of Highland Park (155), while Flower Mound (70) and Highland Park (115) finished second and third, respectively, in girls.
Other local teams included Hebron (seventh in boys, fifth in girls), Marcus (fourth in boys, fifth in girls), Flower Mound (fifth in boys), Carroll's Varsity 2 (sixth in boys, sixth in girls), Coppell (ninth in boys, seventh in girls), Denton Ryan (22nd in boys, 27th in girls) and Lewisville (24th in boys, 23rd in girls). Flower Mound also had a second team compete on the girls side, which placed 12th.
Individually, Carroll dominated the medal stand in boys action as the Dragons swept the top three spots. Joe Sansone (15:14.76) claimed the gold, while Connor Hendrickson took silver (15:30.29) and Nate Sullivan won bronze (15:35.42). In girls action, Flower Mound's reigning district champ Safiya Belbina earned silver (18:22.06) behind Highland Park's Natalie Rathjen (17:59.01). Carroll's Courtney Krieghauser crossed the line in third (18:25.63).
