12-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: Mesquite regains sole possession of first, Horn forces three-way tie for second

Published: Wednesday, January 23, 2013 1:37 PM CST
Horn followed up its huge victory over Mesquite on Friday with another superb effort on Tuesday.

The Jaguars took down a first-place team for the second consecutive game as they rolled over Longview in a 70-50 victory.

With that win, Horn improves to 5-2 in 12-5A and forces a three-way tie for second place with the Lobos and Tyler Lee.

Mesquite, which took care of Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday, was a beneficiary of the Jaguar victory, as they move back into first place with a 6-1 record.

Horn was methodical in taking down Longview, outscoring them in all four quarters. The Jaguars led by six after one quarter and pushed the advantage to 33-22 at halftime. The second half was more of the same, as the Lobos were unable to make a serious charge.

Anthony Sharp had the hot hand from the start for Horn and finished with a game-high 30 points. Adrian Chevis scored 17 points and Zach Charles added 13.

Mesquite got 14 points from Javante Walker, 11 from Rashard Higgins and 10 from Alex Cooper in a 63-47 win over Rockwall-Heath.

The Skeeters did most of their damage early, opening the game on a 21-10 run. The lead swelled to 15 by halftime and it did not get any closer. Cameron Talley had a game-high 21 points for the Hawks.

Although four teams are within a game of one another atop the standings, there could be some separation established this week.

Mesquite plays at Tyler Lee on Friday, while the Red Raiders must also play at Longview on Tuesday.

The Skeeters also host North Mesquite on Tuesday, as the Stallions look to remain in playoff contention.

Horn will have a bye on Friday and then return to action on Tuesday at home against Rockwall-Heath.

FRIDAY

Horn closed out the first half of the 12-5A season with one of the biggest victories to date with a 52-43 win over previously-undefeated Mesquite.

It was the Skeeters that got off to a strong start, as they raced to a 12-5 lead after one quarter.

But the Jaguars had an immediate answer, reeling off a 19-9 spurt of their own to take a 24-21 lead into halftime.

The game stayed close, with the two teams playing even in the third quarter, but it was Horn that took control down the stretch, outscoring Mesquite 19-13 in the fourth to move to within a game of first place in the district standings.

Sharp had 14 points to lead a trio of Jaguars in double figures. Chevis scored 11 poitns and Charles added 10.

Mesquite was led by Higgins with 14 points and Cooper with 13.

North Mesquite had a chance to move into a tie for fourth place but it came up on the short end of a 39-35 loss to Tyler Lee.

The Stallions watched an early lead dwindle away, but they remained close, trailing by two heading to the fourth quarter. But despite 10 points from Mike Williams and nine from Norman Alexander, they were unable to make enough plays down the stretch as the Red Raiders maintained their playoff positioning.
