12-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Mesquite rolls over Tyler Lee, North Mesquite falls short in upset bid
Published: Thursday, January 3, 2013 12:13 AM CST
Mesquite had a chance to create some separation in the 12-5A standings on Wednesday and it did not squander that opportunity.
The Skeeters rolled over Tyler Lee in a 68-44 victory to improve to 3-1 and take over sole possession of second place in the district, one-half game ahead of idle Horn.
Mesquite grabbed a double-digit lead after one quarter and pushed the advantage to 42-24 by halftime. Briana Caro scored 22 points to lead the Skeeters, while Chamberlain Robinson and Brianna Williams each added 13.
The Skeeters almost found themselves in a tie for first place but North Mesquite's bid to knock off undefeated Rockwall came up just short in a 60-53 loss.
North Mesquite, which slipped to 1-2 in district play, overcame an early deficit to grab a three-point lead at halftime and still led 45-42 through three quarters. But the Yellow Jackets showed why they are atop the 12-5A standings, as they went on an 18-8 spurt to close the game and pull out the win.
The Stallions will have another chance to topple one of the district leaders on Saturday when they travel across town to face Mesquite.
Horn, which was off on Wednesday, will host Rockwall-Heath.
