Sunnyvale girls bounce back from rare loss

Published: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 4:05 AM CST
Sunnyvale found itself in the unusual position on Tuesday of needing to bounce back from a district loss.

The Raiders took their frustrations out on Caddo Mills.

Sunnyvale stormed out of the gates with a 26-4 run and was never threatened in a 61-31 victory.

The Raiders improved to 19-5 overall and 6-1 in 12-2A play.

Sunnyvale did not let up after the fast start, pushing its advantage to 41-11 at halftime before calling on the reserves in the second half.

Grace Goodhart nearly outscored Caddo Mills by herself with a game-high 24 points. Sheridan Lewis scored 12 points and Caila Sims added 10.

The Raiders had been coming off a surprising 40-25 loss to Gunter on Friday.

Sunnyvale could not get untracked in the first half and trailed 20-10 at hafltime.

The Raiders seemed to have righted the ship when they went on a 13-5 run in the third quarter to close to within 25-23. But Gunter had an answer, reeling off a 15-2 spurt to close the game and hand Sunnyvale its first district loss.

Goodhart accounted for more than half the team's scoring with 15 points.

The Raiders will be back in action on Friday with a road game against Pilot Point before returning home to host Farmersville on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

After a 1-2 start to the 12-2A season, Sunnyvale bounced back this past week with a pair of victories to bolster its playoff hopes.

The Raiders got off to a strong start on Tuesday and that proved to be the difference in a 67-61 win over Caddo Mills.

Sunnyavle opened the game on a 14-4 run and led 29-17 at halftime. Caddo Mills chipped away in the second half and made things interesting, but the Raiders were able to do enough to hold on for the victory.

Thomas Wendt scored 24 points, Josh Quinn added 15 and Lawson Ayo chipped in with 10 to lead the offense.

Sunnyvale followed the opposite script on Friday, overcoming a slow start to rally for a 50-29 victory over Gunter.

The Raiders scored only five points in the opening quarter but were able to come back for a 21-16 halftime lead.

Sunnyvale took control in the second half, pushing the advantage to 11 through three quarters and closing the game on a 13-3 run.

Quinn had 10 points, Stephen Kirven scored nine and Mohammed Hamidah added eight for the Raiders.

Sunnyvale will try to build on its winning streak on Friday at Pilot Point and then on Tuesday at home against Farmersville.

SOCCER

The Sunnyvale soccer team, which is not playing an offical University Interscholastic League schedule this season, will continue its non-official slate on Friday with a home game against Dallas Life High School at 5 p.m.
