| Joan (left) and Major Oscar Jacob Butcher U.S.A.F. (Ret) |
Major Oscar Jacob Butcher U.S.A.F. (Ret), age 80 and a resident of Flower Mound, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2013.
He was born September 1, 1932, in Oakland, Maryland.More than just a pilot, Oscar Butcher was a distinguished airman who served our country faithfully and honorably for 30 years in our nation's Air Force. He joined the United States Air Force in 1949 as an air policeman. Before he was Major, Oscar enlisted at the age of 17, fulfilling common duties such as scrubbing down the kitchens. He was then selected for pilot training and became a command pilot of the C-124.
He was highly respected by his peers for his flying skills and knowledge of aircraft systems. After serving honorably for 30 years in the USAF, he then went on to instruct pilots at Southwest Airlines and became a senior instructor pilot for Federal Express.
Few people on earth are privileged enough to know the meaning of true love, a once-in-a-lifetime love. Oscar is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Joan, of 47 years; son, Matthew Butcher and wife Kim, of Haslett; stepchildren, Vicki Conard, Janis Dickerson of Austin, and Joe W. Dickerson Jr.; and grandchildren, Mark Reynolds, Amanda Alexander-Wynn, Sarah Dickerson, Joshua Dickerson, and Laura Dickerson and Haley Nelson.
In this moment, the ones who are left behind are reminded that love is patient and kind; it is not jealous, or conceited, or proud, or provoked; it does not keep record of wrongs; love is not happy with evil, but pleased with truth; love never gives up; its faith, hope, and patience never fail. These are the words that Joan holds kindled in her heart as she says goodbye to the love of her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
Burial service will be held on Wednesday, January 30, at 9:00 a.m. at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.
