Frisco names John Bruce chief of police (updated)

The city of Frisco has named John Bruce as its new chief of police. Bruce has been serving as interim police chief since Oct. 1. The move will become effective Wednesday.
Bruce replaces Todd Renshaw, who was named the city's director of public safety the same day Bruce took over as interim chief. In his new position, Renshaw oversees both the police department and fire department.

"It's incredible -- it's really such an honor to be appointed chief in the city of Frisco, because it's such a great city with a fantastic police department," he said. "I'm still just trying to process it all."
Bruce began his law enforcement career in 1986 at the Allen Police Department before joining the Frisco Police Department in 1996. He served as the department's assistant police chief since 2003 before being named interim chief.
In 2002, Bruce earned his bachelor's degree in sociology, and in 2004 he earned his master's degree in public affairs; both degrees were obtained from the University of Texas at Dallas. In addition to his collegiate education, Bruce is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas Leadership and Command College.
Bruce said he looks forward to continuing to work with Renshaw, who he called both a friend and mentor.
"We're going to continue to have weekly meetings, and I'll certainly keep him updated on all the big events that we handle," he explained.
In a statement released by the city, Renshaw cited Bruce's leadership abilities as one of the primary reasons he was elevated from his interim status.
"I have worked with John for many years in a number of assignments," he said. "He is a very capable, even-handed leader. I believe he will do a terrific job as chief and I look forward to working with him for many years to come."
While Bruce takes over the police department, Renshaw is still looking for a new fire chief following Mack Borchardt's retirement from the position last year. No timetable has been given for that appointment, however.
