Boyd excels at Taylor Webb Classic

In the seventh annual Taylor Webb Classic, Boyd had five wrestlers honored with selection to the all tournament team, the most out of the eight-team field. Other area schools that competed included Northwest, Bowie, Frisco Heritage, Lovejoy, Plano Senior, Plano West, and Richardson.

The Broncos that earned selections were Alex Minor (113-pound weight class), Ben Jasinski (120), Jared McCormick (126), Jamie Glew (160), and Kiel Simas (220).

Bobcats fall to Sanger

Celina was outdone by a 21-13 Sanger advantage in the second quarter of Monday night’s contest.

The Bobcats fell 73-64 despite playing Sanger to a standstill in the opening eight minutes and outscoring their opponent, 21-19, in the third frame.

Juniors Braylin Brown and Connor Torbert led Celina with Brown scoring a team-high 22 points and Torbert chipping in 13 of his own.

The two were outdone by Sanger senior Drew Lyons though. Lyons poured in a game-high 23 points while junior Tyler Roelofs added 18 to lead their team to victory.

The Bobcats will look to rebound from Monday’s loss with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Bonham tomorrow.

Sidekicks set record

For all the years the Dallas Sidekicks have been around and all the championships they’ve won, the club never reeled off goals at as rapid a pace as they did Saturday at the AEC.

Dallas beat the Texas Strikers, 21-1.

The 21 goals was a franchise record. The new marks didn’t stop there though as the Sidekicks also recorded their fastest power-play goal (one second in) and most hat tricks (four: Franck Mbemba, Michael Uremovich, Shaun David, Robert Luevano).

The No. 11 jersey of David Doyle was retired during halftime. Doyle is the franchise’s second-leading point scorer (665) behind current head coach Tatu.

Dallas (5-0) and Texas will play again Dec. 29, only this the Sidekicks head to the Ford Arena in Beaumont.

THSCEF Leadership Summit

The Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation is teaming with Game Changers for its leadership summit on Feb. 18, 2013. The event will take place at the AAC.

Winter Games of Texas near

For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state’s largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County. The event is set for Jan. 18-20, 2013.

Close to 4,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers are expected to participate in this year’s event, which features 13 different sports (basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball, table tennis and the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship, which is the latest addition to the annual slate of activities).

While most of the events are taking place in Frisco, the gymnastics portion of the competition will be Jan. 19-20 at ASI Gymnastics-Plano West (4051 Rosemeade Pkwy).

Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and table tennis advance to the 2013 State Games of America, which are July 31-August 4. For more information or to register, go to: taaf.com or call: 1-877-463-7472.

DFW Coaches clinic

High school coaches have a chance to learn from their own. On Jan. 23-25, Embassy Suites Outdoor World at DFW Airport will be the site of a DFW Coaches Clinic, featuring a litany of high school coaches as speakers. Sixteen 50-minute lectures will be given by the coaches on hand, with attendees slated to enjoy a Friday night “Chalk Talk” and dinner with one of the state’s top offensive or defensive minds.

There will also be a Texas Hold-Em tournament on Friday, an FCA lecture on Saturday, plus a $1,000 cash prize up for grabs after the last lecture on Sunday. The clinic’s registration fee is $70 if mailed in by Jan. 18 and $80 afterwards. To pre-register, visit the clinic website at coachesclinic.net.
