Boys basketball: Physical play troubles Farmers in loss against Cedar Hill

LEWISVILLE - Facing a physically imposing Cedar Hill squad Tuesday figured to be a challenge.
Factor in foul trouble to a pair of key players and Lewisville's boys basketball team had plenty of issues as the Farmers came up short against the Longhorns in a non-district game, 51-35.
Lewisville committed 10 first-half turnovers in the loss, fell behind after one quarter, 14-8, and never led.
Compounding the difficulty was early foul trouble for starters Jaden Wright and Anthony Davis. Wright picked up three fouls in the first half and scored all five of his points in the final quarter. Davis, meanwhile, led the Farmers with 10 points but did all of his scoring in the first half, including a 3-pointer and and-1 in the first quarter that gave Lewisville its only tie of the night at 8-8. From there, the Longhorns went on a 22-5 spurt during the first and second quarters to pull away.
"I think the physical play led to the foul trouble in a way," Collier said. "But our guys have to be a little smarter. Some of the fouls they got were kind of swiping down at the ball to try and create a turnover rather than rotating and being in position and take the charge like we teach them. They have to understand that a little better and it comes with experience playing in games."
Lewisville also had troubles containing Cedar Hill inside as Jalen Jones posted 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Charles Wesley chipped in 16 points on 5-of-8 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers.
"Our defense wasn't too bad," Collier said. "A few times we got beat and didn't rotate over. Defensively, we're probably about where we want to be. But offensively we have to put more points on the board."
Lewisville had six blocks as a team.
The Farmers had just five points in the second quarter before a bucket off an offensive rebound by Durwan Green cut the deficit to 30-15 at the break. Green finished with four points, as did Dionte Wilson.
"Wilson came off the bench and did a pretty good job," Collier said. "Luis Hernandez wasn't too bad and Durwan is usually our best defensive player on the ball and he did a good job of staying in front of guys and antagonizing them. He played really well today."
Still, the Farmers didn't have enough offense, in particular with Wright saddled on the bench.
"It really makes a difference," Collier said. "It seems like they play a little different. They're a little tougher and bolder with Jaden being out there. I would like to keep him on the floor, but they have to learn."
Collier believes other issues on the offensive end can be resolved with more experience.
"We have to handle pressure better," he said. "In one-on-one situations we have to be able to catch the ball and go by guys or keep our opponents at bay. And we have to get better at screening and reading screens a lot better. We're not good at that right now, but we're working on it in practice. The effort is there. They're playing to win and are competing. We just have to get more experience."
The Farmers continued Friday against Fort Worth Arlington Heights, where Collier previously coached before coming to Lewisville.
"I know all of those guys over there still," Collier said. "They were there when I was there and this is probably the last crop, maybe one more, of guys that I am familiar with.
"We got some more big guys coming in here. Our guards may be able to breath a little bit, but our big guys are really going to be challenged. We're in for another tough one, which is good. It will help prepare us for our district."
