Learning materials collection available to qualifying nonprofit
By Joan Penzenstadler
A collection of more than 1,300 items used in teaching science, math, and thinking skills is available for donation to a qualified nonprofit wanting to create or expand a community learning center for underserved children and youth.
The nonprofit organization Activiteca International, based in Austin, is seeking an organization that would establish an Activiteca center to provide a variety of educational services in an area currently lacking such services.
The Activiteca programs would consist of out-of-school-time learning activities, learning fairs for the public, tutoring, and help with identifying learning difficulties. Also the Activiteca center would offer training of staff and volunteers in existing after-school programs to improve their science and math offerings, and could help local schools with learning fairs and demonstration classes.
To qualify for the donation of the collection, worth about $50,000, a nonprofit must have had 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status for at least three years and own a space which can be permanently dedicated to an Activiteca center housing the collection and an activity area. The organization must have sufficient financial resources and/or fundraising potential to pay the start-up costs, to employ at least two professional staff, and to keep the collection current. In addition, the organization will sign a contract with Activiteca International to continue the core mission of Activiteca in terms of both the types of services and the methodology.
Interested nonprofits will fill out an application form, and those who qualify will receive a personal visit from Activiteca International to inspect the prospective location for the dedicated space, to observe the applicant’s existing programs, and to meet with the administrators and others involved in any decision on the matter.
