11-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: Eagles make emphatic statement with revenge win over Lakeview
Published: Wednesday, February 6, 2013 12:23 AM CST
There are certain losses that stick with a team, those that leaves a sour, lingering taste in its mouth.
That could definitely be applied to Rowlett's first meeting with Lakeview, when the Patriots not only handed them their first district loss, but did so in blowout fashion, 76-50.
The Eagles have been biding their time since, taking care of business in anticipation of the rematch.
With its chance on Tuesday, Rowlett made the most of it, turning the tables on Lakeview in a 71-61 victory.
The Eagles improve to 10-1 in 11-5A and move one-half game ahead of the Patriots (9-1) in the district race.
The 10-point margin was a little misleading as it does not fully explain how dominant Rowlett was in the opening half.
The Eagles started the game on a 17-4 run and by halftime, the lead had swelled to an eye-popping 40-15.
Lakeview got its offense going in the second half, but Rowlett had more than enough left in the tank to hold off the charge.
Nathan Hawkins scored 25 points, Jeffrey Carroll had 22 and Austin Luke added 12 for the Eagles. Lakeview's Charles Beauregard had 20 points, while Cameron Hardy and Elbert Robinson each chipped in with 10.
Rowlett has a bye on Friday and closes the regular season on Tuesday against Garland. Lakeview plays the Owls on Friday and then finishes with Sachse. If the teams are tied at season's end, they would share the 11-5A championship and the top seed would be decided either by coin flip or a play-in game.
While it was not the marquee game of the night, Sachse potentially picked up one of the biggest wins in school history with a 48-45 victory over Naaman Forest.
The Mustangs, in search of their first-ever playoff appearance, move into sole possession of third place at 5-5, a half-game ahead of the Rangers and one game ahead of Garland.
The game was tight throughout, with Sachse taking a 25-21 lead into halftime. Naaman Forest stayed within striking distance, but the Mustangs were able to make the advantage stand up until the end.
Michael Olivares had nine points and Tyrique Edwards added eight as part of a balanced offensive effort that saw 10 different players score. Davi Soares scored 18 points to lead the Rangers.
Sachse could clinch a playoff berth on Friday if it can defeat North Garland and Garland loses to Lakeview.
The Mustangs close the season with the Patriots, while the Owls have another tough game at Rowlett.
Naaman Forest closes the regular season at South Garland on Friday. The Rangers can also secure a postseason spot with a win over the Colonels and a Garland loss.
