Each April, the city of Mesquite hosts its marquee event, the Real.Texas.Festival.

This year the festival takes place on April 26 and 27 and will be headlined by country musicians Kevin Fowler and Pat Green. Both artists have previously performed at the festival, with Green serving as a headliner last year.

"Green always has a great fan base. We had him here last year, and it was one of the highlights of the festival," said Wayne Larson, communications director for the city of Mesquite.

In addition to music, entertainment at the festival will include a food drive, carnival rides, the rodeo, a car show, numerous vendors and a battle of the bands competition.

The city is also looking to make a couple of changes this year with the elimination of the barbecue contest and the addition of a youth basketball tournament.

"We are adding a youth basketball tournament. Plus, like any major festival, we will make behind-the-scenes changes to modify a few operational aspects to make the event even more enjoyable for families," Larson said. "We are always looking for ways to enhance the event year after year. The tournament will be a way to add yet another activity for youth to get involved."

The festival will also include a basketball clinic taught by Nancy Lieberman.

Despite many challenges, including inclement weather, the festival has continued to grow each year.

"[Last year] we had more than 30,000 [people attend], which was the largest in the six-year history of the event," Larson said.

The city created the event originally to be its signature event. The city reallocated the funds from its annual Fourth of July celebration to cover the cost associated with producing the event. The city has maintained its goal for the festival since its inception.

"[We want to provide] a fun, safe and affordable festival," Larson said. "We hope this year we [have] another successful event. Each year, this festival has grown in attendance, popularity and regional awareness. All our numbers, from attendance to sponsorships to donations to the mayor's food drive, continue to trend upwards."

The festival will be held at the city's rodeo center, 1818 Rodeo Drive. Tickets will go on sale in March. For information, visit realtexasfestival.com
