A man apparently shot and killed himself Monday morning near the Cross Oaks Elementary School in the 8700 block of Tumbleweed Drive just west of Liberty Boulevard in an unincorporated area of Denton County.

Police officers from Oak Point were dispatched to the location after a bus driver noticed the body in a vehicle parked near the school. According to the Oak Point Department of Public Safety (OPDPS), when officers arrived at the scene they discovered a white sport utility vehicle parked on Tumbleweed Drive, not in the school parking lot as was reported by some media outlets. Inside, they found a deceased male sitting in the driver's seat.

The man, believed to be in his 50's, had a small caliber bullet wound to the side of his head. A weapon was also recovered from the vehicle by officers.

It is unclear as to why the man chose to park his vehicle near the school. No students at the nearby Cross Oaks Elementary School were ever in danger. The school was placed on lockdown while law enforcement officials investigated the incident. The OPDPS is working to complete their investigation, but at this time investigators are considering the cause of death a self-inflicted gunshot.
