10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wranglers cruise past Creekview as top pack distances itself from field

Published: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 4:06 AM CST
The race for the 10-4A championship is shaping up to be a good one down the stretch, as Carrollton Newman Smith, Highland Park and West Mesquite all won on Tuesday to put further distance between themselves and the rest of the district.

The Wranglers had to win to keep their hopes of a district championship alive and they did just that with a 81-46 victory over fourth-place Carrollton Creekview.

West Mesquite improves to 6-2 in district play and not only keeps pace with Newman Smith (8-0) and Highland Park (7-1) but also extends its lead over the Mustangs (4-4) to two games for third place.

The Wranglers had their offense revved up early, scoring 25 points in the opening quarter, but Creekview was still hanging on by a thread facing a 46-30 deficit at halftime.

West Mesquite erased any doubt in the second half, closing the game on a 20-7 spurt to put an exclamation point on the win.

Alexus Bertrand scored 21 points to lead a quartet of Wranglers in double figures. Claudia Price had 17 points, while Alexis Jordan and Regina Garrett added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Brianna Shavers led Creekview with eight points.

During the next week, the top three teams will look to hold serve, with no head-to-head matchups.

West Mesquite plays at winless Terrell on Friday and at home against North Forney on Tuesday. Newman Smith plays at crosstown rival Creekview and at Forney, while Highland Park will host North Forney and Poteet.

For the Pirates, they are needing to pull an upset or two if they hope to make the playoffs after Tuesday's 59-29 loss to Newman Smith dropped them to 2-6 in district play. Shyari Cheathem scored 10 points and Raeghan Shaw added eight to lead the Pirate offense.

Poteet is tied for sixth place with Forney, one game behind North Forney and two behind Creekview for the final postseason spot.

The Pirates will host the Jackrabbits on Friday with the loser all but eliminated from the playoff race. They will then head to Highland Park with upset on their minds on Tuesday.

FRIDAY

The old saying goes that records are out the window in rivalry games but West Mesquite was not buying any of that on Friday.

The Wranglers, still steaming from back-to-back district losses, took it out on their opponent for the second consecutive game with a 80-27 victory over the Pirates.

The Wranglers came out looking to end the drama quick and they did so in the first half. Behind 34 points from Bertrand, West Mesquite started the game on a 23-5 run and stretched the advantage to 39-10 by halftime.

The second half was more of the same, as the Wranglers continued to stifle the Pirate offense, outscoring them 41-17 during the final two quarters.

In addition to Bertrand, Tamia Culligan and Price were also in double figures with 10 points each.

Poteet was led by Shaw with 10 points, with Cheathem also adding seven.
