Sunnyvale girls fall in semifinals of tournament

Every basketball team has a series of goals throughout the season.
The biggest of those include playoff appearances, district championships and postseason victories.
But there are also goals to be achieved during the course of the season, including tournament championships, especially when playing the role of host.
The Raiders started strong with a pair of victories, but fell in the semifinals to Trinity Christian-Addison on Friday in a 40-28 loss. TCA would go on to claim the Sunnyvale Invitational championship on Saturday with a win over Edgewood.
Sunnyvale never could quite get untracked in its semifinal loss and fell into an early 20-11 hole.
The Raiders allowed only two points in the second quarter, but accounted for only three themselves as they still trailed by eight at halftime.
TCA put the game away in the third quarter, as a 14-6 spurt gave them a 36-20 lead. Sunnyvale allowed only four points in the final period, but the deficit was too much to make up.
Grace Goodhart scored 12 points and Sheridan Lewis added eight for the Raiders.
That duo was solid throughout the tournament.
In the opener on Thursday, Goodhart had 16 points and Lewis scored 12 as Sunnyvale ran away in the second half for a 57-37 win over Life School Red Oak.
The Raiders moved on to the semifinals later on Thursday with a 61-25 rout of Kemp. Sunnyvale led 27-10 at halftime and then erased any hopes Kemp had with a 23-1 run in the third period.
Goodhart and Lewis scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, and were joined in double figures by Caila Sims with 13 points and Olivia Williams with 11.
The Raiders (15-4) now turn their attention back to district play, where they are off to a great start with a 4-0 mark.
Sunnyvale has won its four district games by an average of 18 points per game and will look for that to continue on Friday with a home game against Leonard.
The Raiders will also play a non-district game on Tuesday at Princeton.
The Sunnyvale boys took some time off during the past week, electing not to play in a holiday tournament. The Raiders will return to district play on Friday against Leonard before enjoying a district bye on Tuesday.
