10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wranglers, Pirates roll to easy victories

Published: Saturday, February 2, 2013 12:53 AM CST
The two Forney girls basketball teams are probably happy they don't have to see their two neighbors from Mesquite anymore this season.

West Mesquite ran over Forney on Friday while Poteet stymied North Forney as the 10-4A season crept closer to its finish.

The Wranglers, in the thick of the playoff seeding race, did their part with a 89-51 victory to improve to 10-3 in district play.

But West Mesquite is still in third place after second-place Highland Park handed 10-4A leader Carrollton Newman Smith its first district loss of the season.

The Wranglers, who close the regular season on Tuesday against Poteet, will have to hope for the biggest surprise of the season if they have any chance at tying Highland Park, as the Scots close with winless Terrell.

West Mesquite had four players in double figures in the blowout of Forney, led by 18 points each from Regina Garrett and Claudia Price.

The Wranglers raced out of the gates with 27 points in the opening quarter and led 45-25 at halftime. West Mesquite finished the way it started, scoring 27 points in the fourth to put the finishing touches on the win.

Alexus Bertrand added 17 points and Tamia Culligan chipped in with 14 for the Wranglers.

Poteet has been eliminated from postseason contention but it has not stopped them from playing hard, as it won its second consecutive game, knocking off North Forney 47-28 to move into fifth place at 5-8.

The Pirates grabbed the early lead but it was still in doubt with just a 30-24 advantage through three quarters. It was all Poteet from there, though, as it closed with a 17-4 run.

Raeghan Shaw scored 13 points and Savannah Doty added 12 for the Pirates. Lauren Stotts paced North Forney with nine points.

Despite suffering its first loss, Newman Smith can still clinch the outright 10-4A championship and the top seed in the playoffs by defeating Forney on Tuesday.

Carrollton Creekview punched the fourth and final postseason ticket on Friday by defeating Terrell.
