Little Elm Friends of the Library to host trivia night next month to benefit library

Competitors who want to test the limits of their knowledge and help their local library at the same time can sign up for the 15th annual Trivia Contest and Fundraiser, hosted by the Little Elm Friends of the Library (FOL).

The fundraiser, which offers food, trivia and prizes, will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at a new location this year, the Little Elm Recreation Center, 303 Main Street.

"We got an offer from the city," said Cathy Wood, FOL special events coordinator. "It's a bigger gym and gives us more flexibility with the layout."

The night of trivia questions, food and a silent auction benefits the Little Elm Public Library, which is currently undergoing expansion. FOL has contributed $35,000 to the expansion using proceeds from the trivia event. It is FOL's largest fundraiser of the year.

"The Friends do help us out a lot and it is a great event to attend," said Spencer Smith, Little Elm Public Library director.

In the trivia, each team of five to eight players competes to gain the highest number of correct answers in categories such as geography and entertainment. Each team has eight rounds of questions.

"Regardless of the fact that all the money goes back to support the library, the event is really fun," Smith said. "Even if it didn't make any money for the library, it's still a fun event [to attend]."

Smith said the $10,000 raised at last year's trivia helped fund the downloadable audio books among other services the library offers. They would not have been able to offer that service from a budgetary standpoint without the fundraiser, he added.

"There are things the money funds that we couldn't get without this event," Smith said.

Proceeds from the event also fund the FOL's $1,000 scholarship to a junior or senior who attends school in the Little Elm area and volunteers with the library and FOL.

Playing against 42 other teams, Team Smarty Pants took home the Trivia trophy and a grand prize of $500 last year. They dedicated their win to the late Little Elm Town Council Member Brenda Mills, donating $100 of the grand prize back to the library.

Prizes will also be given for Best Costume and Most Spirited. A raffle will be held between rounds.

During the event, team members and spectators, who can watch the event from the bleachers, will be able to enjoy barbecue, pizza, candy and drinks. Outside food is not permitted. Team members must be seated by 6:45 p.m. in order to participate.

Regular tables are $80 during pre-registration and $90 each at the door. Regular tables will be available on a first come, first served basis. VIP tables are $250 each for up to eight members. Pre-registration is required for these tables. Any unpaid tables will be forfeited after Feb. 22.

The VIP tables offer the choice of a book to be donated in the group's name to the library and the table decorated in the book's theme. These tables will also receive one two-topping 13-inch pizza, a basket of popcorn and a drink for each team member.

Teams that purchase a VIP table will have their names printed in the Trivia 2013 program and receive a free raffle ticket for each team member.

Teams can sign up until 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 26, but VIP tables are only available until Feb. 22.

Individuals who wish to participate in the trivia contest, but do not have a team may contact Wood and be added to a list. As the event draws closer, FOL may be able to place that individual with a team that does not have the full eight members.

"We try as best as we can to get [individuals] on a team," Wood said. "We always have teams that don't have eight members."

Registration forms can be found at trivia.littleelmfol.org, at littleelm.org or in the Little Elm Public Library, 100 West Eldorado Parkway. Teams can also register at trivia.littleelmfol.org and pay by credit card.

Checks can be made out to Friends of the Library. Registration forms and checks can be mailed to Little Elm Friends of the Library, Attention: Trivia 2013, P.O. Box 598, Little Elm, TX, 75068-0598. Forms can be dropped off at the library.
