Wake-up call: West Mesquite overcomes slow start to down Frisco Centennial

GARLAND--It is not often a team wins when it starts a game by missing its first 20 shots.

Yet that was the rare feat West Mesquite was able to pull off on Tuesday night.

The Wranglers overcame their horrendous shooting start with a couple of huge runs in the second and fourth quarters and that was enough to rally past Frisco Centennial for a 54-46 victory in a Class 4A bi-district playoff game at Naaman Forest High School.

Sidekicks and Lovegrove find their groove, defeat the Sockers

Published: Thursday, January 31, 2013 7:19 PM CST
The Dallas Sidekicks hosted the San Diego Sockers here at the Allen Event Center on Jan. 27, 2013. The game had much anticipation due to the fact that the Sockers had been on a 27-game win streak. But the sidekicks fought hard to change that.

At the beginning of the game, a prayer was said for Sidekicks player RJ Luevano and his son Luca, who is in the hospital suffering from brain trauma.

The game progressed quickly as each team was fired up to play and get a victory for their organization. The first shot on goal for the Sockers was saved by Sidekicks player No. 1 Sagu. The ball was kicked around rapidly back and forth among the teams until Sidekicks player No. 32 Jamie Lovegrove made the score 1-0! The quarter progressed and as it went on, Sidekicks player No. 24 Shaun David scored the second goal! With 30 seconds remaining, Sagu made an amazing save to end the quarter with a score of 2-0 Sidekicks.

To start off the second quarter, the Sidekicks got a 2-minutes penalty after their 16th foul. At 4:42, No. 37 from the Sockers scored an amazing goal, unable to be blocked by Sidekicks' Sagu. Shortly after that another one of the Sockers, Anthony Medina, scored an exciting goal, tying the game up 2-2. The crowd stood to their feet in excitement. Both teams coming up short on their power play chances, the second quarter ended, going into the amazing halftime performance.

With only three minutes into the third quarter, Jamie Lovegrove No. 32 scored his second goal, bringing ahead the Sidekicks 3-2. Not long after that another goal was kicked in by Lovegrove at 12:55, making that his third goal of the game. The ball was passed up and down the field until the Sockers made another goal at 7:48, tying the game up once again, 4-4. As the third quarter was rounding to an end, Lovegrove kicked an outstanding goal, pulling the Sidekicks ahead 5-4. That was his fourth goal, and he was ready to play even harder starting off the fourth.

An intense fourth quarter would lead to much joy and some disappointment. The Sockers and Sidekicks played man-to-man defense and stopped every opportunity of scoring for each team. Until 42 seconds remained and Sidekicks' own, Sagu, made an amazing save to keep the lead 5-4. Until intensity picked up for the Sockers creating a chance to score, which they accomplished. The Sockers scored with 6.07 seconds left to tie it 5-5!

But it wasn't over until someone achieved victory. Overtime it was.

The Sockers blasted shot after shot, but Sagu remained a wall, blocking them all. 3:32 seconds into overtime, Sidekicks' David sprinted down the field as Sagu threw the ball to him. David cut across a defender, making a chance for a wide open shot - this was his time. As David approached the ball, the goalie came forward to engulf the ball, but it was too late. David's quick foot bolted the ball into the net to win!! The stadium went chaotic and David celebrated along with the team.

The Sockers had been defeated here in Dallas, breaking their winning streak and confidence. The Sidekicks had come out on top, triumphantly. I had a feeling, this one was for Luca.
