12-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: Skeeters, Stallions notch district victories
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Mesquite's Alex Cooper spent the fall showing off his ability to take over games on the football field.
The senior is showing that same trait on the basketball court.
Cooper scored a game-high 34 points as Mesquite picked up a big, early-district victory with a 55-48 win over Tyler Lee on Wednesday.
Mesquite, which did not have another player in double figures, needed all the scoring it could get down the stretch. The Skeeters trailed at halftime and were tied through three quarters before outscoring the Red Raiders 21-14 in the fourth quarter.
The Stallions were solid from start to finish in their 51-35 victory over Rockwall.
The Stallions used a 13-6 run in the second quarter to take control and then allowed only six points in the final period.
Ryan Bradley led the offense with 18 points, while Norman Alexander added 11.
The Skeeters and Stallions will hook up in a big game when they meet on Saturday at North Mesquite High School. Horn, which had a district bye on Wednesday, will return to the court on Saturday with a road game at Rockwall-Heath.
