Flip a coin: Lady Bobcats get three seed after loss to Argyle

Published: Wednesday, February 6, 2013 2:05 PM CST
When the playoffs begin Monday night, the Celina girls basketball team will start its run on a losing note after dropping a 44-38 contest to Argyle on Tuesday.

The Lady Bobcats also fell into a two-way tie for second place with Argyle in the district standings and got the three seed after losing a coin flip between the two teams earlier this week.

“Anything can happen once you get into the playoffs,” said Jordan Davis, Celina head coach.

Tuesday’s loss came despite a game-high 23 points from junior guard Sarah Cantu, who became the only Celina player to reach double figures.

“I was pleased with the way [Cantu] played,” Davis said. “She kept us in it by making some big shots.”

The two teams went back-and-forth in the opening half before Argyle took an eventual 22-21 lead into the locker room. However, a big third quarter saw the Lady Eagles take a seven-point lead into the final frame and that deficit would prove to be too costly for the Lady Bobcats.

“We came back and made it a two-point game,” Davis said. “We just had a couple of missed opportunities late in the game and missed some big shots.”

The loss dropped Celina to 5-3 against District 10-3A counterparts and sets up a Monday first-round playoff matchup against Gainesville. Specifics of the contest had not been set as of press time.

“[Gainesville] has a good squad,” Davis said. “It should be a good game.”

The two teams squared off in a Dec. 21 meeting that saw Celina earn a 58-45 victory behind a team-high 16 points from Cantu. Sophomore forward Kynese Davis added 14 of her own in the game while sophomore guard Alex Jones chipped in 10.

“Just because we beat them earlier in the year, that doesn’t mean anything in the playoffs,” Davis said. “Once the playoffs start, anything can happen. We just need to be sure we’re prepared.”

Celina will enter the matchup with a relatively healthy roster. However, several players have battled the flu recently and have missed practice time. Davis said her team should be ready to go come Monday.

“We should have everyone there,” she said. “We’ll be ready to go.”
