Lady Broncos earn state ranking

The McKinney Boyd softball team was recently ranked among the state's best in the Texas Girls Coaches Association's first softball poll of the season. The Lady Broncos were ranked No. 9.

Boyd was also the only Metroplex area softball team ranked in the Top 10. The Lady Broncos open their 2013 season 6:45 p.m. Thursday against Mansfield Timberview in the Mansfield ISD Tournament.

Area basketball playoff roundup

A week after the girls ended their regular season, the area boys basketball teams ended theirs. For the girls, McKinney and McKinney North advanced to the postseason while McKinney Boyd fell short by one district spot.

North won their bi-district matchup against Longview Pine Tree while McKinney lost to Dallas Skyline. North advances to play Red Oak 7 p.m. Friday at Sachse High School.

On the boys side, McKinney North clinched the second spot in District 13-4A with a win Tuesday night. North will play Texas High next week in the bi district round. In 10-5A action, Boyd clinched the fourth and final playoff spot while McKinney fell short, finishing fifth. Boyd will play Richardson Berkner 7:30 p.m. Tuesday from Naaman Forest High School.

Soccer begins district play

The McKinney area boys and girls soccer clubs kicked off their district season in unison Tuesday night. In District 10-5A action, the Boyd boys beat Plano West 6-3 while the Lady Broncos lost to Plano West 1-0.

As for Boyd's cross-town rival, the McKinney Lionettes beat Plano Senior 1-0. Meanwhile, in 13-4A action, the McKinney North boys beat Denison 5-2. The North girls also thoroughly trounced Denison, winning 8-0.

Collin County man among Fan Cave finalists

Plano West alum Mina Park is among the 52 finalists for the MLB Fan Cave 2013 competition.

Park is representing the Texas Rangers, with a chance at moving to New York to watch every baseball game of the upcoming season while blogging, interviewing players and making creative videos. The competition's top 30 finalists are selected through fan voting, the original audition submission and ability to generate media buzz.

Each finalist will be flown out to spring training in Arizona later this month. To vote for Park, go to: mlb.mlb.com/fancave/vote.jsp.

Nike Hoop Summit selects Randle

McKinney resident Julius Randle, a Prestonwood Christian Academy alum, has been selected for the Nike Hoop Summit on Apr. 20 in Portland, Ore.

"Julius was obviously selected based on his ability to play basketball, but more importantly based on his character," said Chris Mayberry, Prestonwood head coach. "He has kept such a positive attitude dealing with the adversity of his injury and will continue to be selected for honors and awards because of his character."

The Nike Hoop Summit is one of the premier high school basketball showcases, pitting the country's top seniors against a World Select Team.

Randle is no stranger to such competition, capturing a gold medal on Team USA at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship last summer.

Football masters clinic is near

The Texas Football Masters Clinic comes to the DoubleTree Galleria Feb. 20-21. The clinic, which runs 4-6 p.m. both days, will focus on advanced schemes and techniques from top coaches across the state. For more info, go to: fbmasters.com.

The Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation is teaming with Game Changers for its leadership summit on Feb. 18, 2013. The event will take place at the AAC.
