11-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: Mustangs clinch playoff berth for first time in school history

Published: Monday, February 11, 2013 10:02 PM CST
After years of close calls and near misses, Sachse finally arrived on the playoff scene.

The Mustangs took care of business against winless North Garland on Friday with a 65-43 victory to officially punch their ticket to the postseason.

Not only is Sachse in, but with Naaman Forest's loss to South Garland, it will be the third seed in the playoffs and will play either Longview or Horn in the opening round of the playoffs next week.

The Mustangs have had a tendency to trip up in similar games in recent years but they were never threatened by the Raiders.

Sachse grabbed an eight-point lead early on and then scored 23 points in the second quarter to open a 38-23 halftime lead.

For good measure, the Mustangs doubled up North Garland, 16-8, in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Jake Gross and Michael Olivares each scored 14 points to lead Sachse, while Sebastian Bermea led all scorers with 18 for the Raiders.

Rowlett had a bye on Friday and could only watch from afar as Lakeview pulled into a tie for first place with its win over Garland.

If the Eagles defeat the Owls and the Patriots beat Sachse, they will share the 11-5A title and the top seed in the playoffs will either be decided by a coin flip or a play-in game.

The Mustangs are entrenched in third place, but there is still some drama regarding the fourth and final playoff spot.

Slumping Naaman Forest, which has a bye on Tuesday, finished with 5-7 record. The Rangers must now wait to see if that mark will hold up.

Garland and South Garland both trail Naaman Forest by a half-game, with season-ending finales against Rowlett and North Garland, respectively.

If either, or both, win, it will force a tie for fourth place. All three teams split the season series. Therefore, if it is a two-way tie, they will be forced into a coin flip or, more likely, a play-in game. If all three teams finish tied, there will be a tiebreaking tournament to decide the final postseason spot.
