Nelson bill aims to strengthen Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas

Published: Wednesday, February 6, 2013 11:13 AM CST
Representative Jim Keffer, R-Eastland, and State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, Tuesday presented to the Legislature a unified plan to strengthen the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) and restore its mission of finding treatments and cures for cancer.

"Most of the problems at this institute involve individuals not following existing rules and laws," Nelson said. "This legislation will ensure that we can resume our historic fight against cancer in a fair, transparent manner that Texans deserve."

"We want to send a strong and clear message to the new CPRIT leadership that we expect them to improve accountability and follow the rules," Keffer said. "Texans voted overwhelmingly to create this institute to find scientific breakthroughs in the prevention of cancer and cures for cancer. We are counting on CPRIT leaders to get the job done right."

Keffer is the original author and Nelson the original sponsor of the 2007 law and accompanying constitutional amendment establishing the institute and authorizing $3 billion to fight cancer over a 10-year period.

The plan:

· codifies existing CPRIT rules;

· restructures its governing body to ensure compliance with rules and laws;

· clarifies conflict-of-interest prohibitions; and

· incorporates several recommendations from the report issued last week by the State Auditor’s Office.
