Boys basketball: Flower Mound rolls in pool play
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
Flower Mound's boys basketball got out to a hot start Thursday in its second game of the Marauder-Jaguar Classic, scoring 25 points in the first quarter against Irving Nimitz.
The Jaguars (10-3) then clamped down on the defensive end, limiting the Vikings (5-4) to just nine points in the second quarter. The result was a 43-27 halftime advantage that Flower Mound carried throughout en route to a 76-50 victory.
"We played really, really well," said Jason Fossett, Flower Mound head coach. "We shot well. We defended well. We came out and did what we needed to do and I was very pleased. That was a team that made the playoffs in Class 5A last year."
"We did a good job on the boards and that led to us getting out in transition and getting some easy baskets," Fossett said.
Flower Mound had a large run in the third quarter as well with a spurt leading to a 19-11 advantage in the period.
Defensively, Fossett was impressed with Flower Mound's ability to slow down Nimitz guard Israel Omigie, who scored 27 points earlier in the afternoon in Nimitz's opening win against Denton.
Omigie scored 10 points in the first quarter against Flower Mound but managed just three the rest of the way.
"We did a good job of mixing up defenses," Fossett said. "We trapped him a little bit and made the rest of the team beat us."
The Jaguars had a similar result earlier Thursday in their opener against Fort Worth Western Hills, which went Flower Mound's way, 65-32.
"It was pretty much the same story as the Nimitz game except that we didn't shoot the ball quite as well," Fossett said. "But everyone played well and it was a great way to start the tournament."
The Jaguars held Western Hills to fewer than 10 points in three of the four quarters and led at halftime, 34-11.
Feickert scored a team-high 13 points, while Langley had nine, Connor Green posted eight and Colby Cox, Gearen Littlefield and Sam Montgomery chipped in six apiece. Flower Mound had nine players score overall.
Flower Mound continued Friday against Denton and opened bracket play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (results not available as of press time).
