Volleyball: Flower Mound closing in on No. 2 seed

Published: Saturday, October 20, 2012 1:53 AM CDT
Seeding is still up in the air, but the playoff teams from District 5-5A have been determined with one match remaining before postseason competition begins.

After securing a five-set victory last Friday against Flower Mound (18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 15-7), Coppell had the inside track to win the district title and could secure that No. 1 seed Friday night with a victory over Denton Ryan (results not available as of press time).

Coppell (7-1) leads Flower Mound (7-2) by just one match with one remaining. However, the Cowgirls could have wrapped up the district title on the strength of owning the tiebreaker by virtue of a pair of head-to-head wins.

Flower Mound, meanwhile, is still on control of the No. 2 seed after bouncing back with a pair of wins, including defeating Hebron Tuesday (25-15, 23-25, 25-15, 25-23) and Marcus Friday (25-13, 25-21, 25-21).

"These matches were extremely important for us to get the No. 2 seed and make our playoff run a little smoother," said Marci Brinkman, Flower Mound head coach. "That was a huge goal of ours and I'm pleased to see our girls finishing the district season strong right now."

In the win against Hebron, Jordan Anderson led the Lady Jaguars with 24 kills, 14 digs and four blocks, while Briana Allmon and Lauren Cox paced the team in hitting percentage. Molly Werts and Erin Layne contributed 19 and 14 assists, respectively, while Kristyn Schott had 14 digs and Logan Kelly and Allmon chipped in seven digs apiece.

"It was a pretty tight match," Brinkman said. "Hebron is a very strong team and I was pleased with the intensity our girls came out with because that is a very tough team to beat twice in a season."

Flower Mound completed another season sweep Friday topping Marcus.

"It was another good match for us," Brinkman said. "We were solid on offense and we average two blocks per game as a team, which was really nice to see."

Cox and Amberli Cluff led in hitting percentage, while Anderson again recorded the most overall kills with 14. Werts and Layne had 18 and 14 assists, respectively, while Schots led with 11 digs and Cox had a team-high four blocks.

Flower Mound closes the regular season at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against Denton Ryan.

"We're excited to have one match left to finish the regular season and get the No. 2 seed," Brinkman said. "We're ready for the playoffs to get going."

The Lady Hawks (6-3) and Lady Marauders (4-5) round out the playoff teams from 5-5A.

District action concludes at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with Denton Ryan hosting Flower Mound, Marcus taking on Hebron at home and Coppell going on the road to face Lewisville.
