Used car dealership garners council approval: Business to move its headquarters to Mesquite
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
There are no longer zoning limits to Shannon Rodden opening Rodden's No Limit Motors in Mesquite.
Rodden originally presented his case during the Feb. 4 Mesquite City Council meeting for a conditional use permit to sell used vehicles. Following a tie vote, the council tabled the item to allow some concerns of the council to be addressed.
The permit was redrafted to comply with the wishes of the city council and passed by a 5-2 vote at the Monday, Feb. 18, council meeting. Councilmembers Dennis Tarpley and Shirley Roberts were the dissenting votes.
"I appreciate all the council members that I have worked with over the last two weeks," Rodden said."
Some of the changes to the permit include the requirement that the parking lot be restriped, the roof must have an architectural steel seam roof installed and 80 percent of the inventory on the property must be newer than 8 years old. All vehicles that are displayed within 60 feet of the right of way facing I-635 are required to be less than 8 years old. Also, the cars cannot have any writing on the windshields.
The permit will be tied to the Rodden's No Limit Motors dealership and cannot be transferred.
Rodden has been operating his multi-dealership business from its Forney location. He plans to move the business' headquarters and service facilities to Mesquite.
One of the main things that attracted Rodden to the former Mazda location was the existing 13-bay service center.
One resident spoke in favor of granting Rodden the permit.
"I think it's a shame that the dealership is sitting there empty, and I think he will make a significant investment and be an asset," said Pamela Cantrell Brown, Mesquite resident.
