Hometown heroes return
Army Sgt. Howard J. Bishop, Army Spec. Mario A. Duran and Army Spec. John Rodriguez have returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Bishop is an airborne infantryman assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. He has served in the military for five years and is the grandson of Howard Bishop of Mesquite. The sergeant is a 2005 graduate of Dallas Christian High School, Mesquite.
Duran is a fire support specialist and forward observer assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. He has served in the military for three years. While deployed, he was awarded an Army Commendation Medal. He is the son of Juan Duran of Mesquite. The specialist is a 2009 graduate of Poteet High School, Mesquite.
Rodriguez is a parachute rigger assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. He has served in the military for four years. He is the son of Modesta Flores of Dallas. The specialist is a 2009 graduate of Mesquite Academy.
Operation Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners. Active duty and reserve component members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces have been deployed to support the war against global terrorism outside the borders of the United States. U.S. troops serve in South, Southwest and Central Asia, the Arabian peninsula, the Horn of Africa, islands in the Pacific, and Europe.

Tax assistance available at library
AARP is providing free tax assistance for all citizens on a first-come, first-served basis, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays only at the Mesquite Public Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive.
Volunteers to assist will continue to be available on Mondays only on Feb. 25, March 4, 11, 18 and 25 and April 1, 8 and 15.
Interested individuals should bring a Social Security card or other documentation for taxpayer and dependents, a copy of last year's return and required paperwork (W-2 forms, 1099 forms, etc.).
Grief expert to speak at VNA luncheon
Grief expert Fred Theobald will be the featured speaker at the Feb. 28 bereavement luncheon hosted by the Visiting Nurse Association.
Theobald will speak on "The Four Tasks of Mourning."
The luncheon is from noon to 1 p.m. at the Church of the Incarnation, 3966 McKinney Avenue in Dallas. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but reservations are requested and can be made through Feb. 26 by calling 214-689-2633.
VNA's bereavement luncheons offer supportive company from friendly and understanding people to individuals who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
A night of family fun at the Mesquite Main Library
Come enjoy a lively production featuring songs and dances when Boitumelo Music and Dance brings its Caribbean Islands Show to the Mesquite Main Library on Thursday, Feb. 28.
Boitumelo Music and Dance is an acoustic duet consisting of Rochelle Rabouin & Stewart Shelton. "Boitumelo" means "happiness" in the South African language of Tswana.
All ages are welcome. The show begins at 7 p.m. at the Mesquite Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive. For information, call 972-216-6220.
Book club will discuss 'The Language of Flowers'
The next meeting of the Mesquite Public Library book club is 7 p.m., Thursday, March 7. The featured book is "The Language of Flowers" by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.
Patrons of the Mesquite Public Library are invited to join the book club. Each month the club will read a different book and then meet to discuss it. The club meets first Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the Meeting Room at the Mesquite Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive. For information call 972-216-6220.
