Around Allen: HeARTS for ART benefit this weekend

Published: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 3:51 PM CST
The HeARTS for ART benefit and silent auction will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Allen ISD Performing Arts Center. All proceeds will go to acute myeloid leukemia research at Cooks Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth.

The event is held in honor of Samantha Schmidt, who asked her family to organize a fundraiser and donate the proceeds to Cooks Children's for AML research before dying of the disease in 2012. Last year's event helped raise more than $20,000.

A sample of activities that will take place Sunday include a silent auction and raffle, hair and face painting, art workshop, arts and crafts stations, refreshments, a bake sale and a collection of musical performances.

Kiwanis Club celebrates 25th anniversary

The Kiwanis Club of Allen celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this month by presenting charter members Dr. David Olson and Susan Bartlemay with the Kiwanis Legion of Honor, an award given to those who've spent 25 years in the organization.

“I joined Kiwanis because it was the first service organization to accept women,” Bartlemay said. “My father was [a member of the Optimist Club], so growing up I knew the importance of service to my community.”

The Kiwanis began officially accepting women members in 1987.

“I joined Kiwanis expecting to give back to my community and offer to others a hand up in return for the many blessings that have been extended to me,” Olson said about his membership in the organization.

Allen Mayor Stephen Terrell and representatives from the Kiwanis International and other local clubs were present at the meeting, which also saw Allen HS student Kaitlyn Wilson named as the club's Sophomore of the Year. The award will allow her to compete for a Walter Hurst scholarship from Kiwanis International.Photo courtesy of HeARTs for Art -- HeARTs for Art, a fundraiser created in honor of Samantha Schmidt, donated a check of more than $20,000 to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth for research into acute myeloid leukemia last year.
