Non-incumbent candidate files to run for Frisco City Council, ensuring election (updated)

Editor's Note: This article was originally published at 5:36 p.m. March 1. It has been updated to reflect Greg Strange's candidacy change and the approval of polling contracts with Denton County and Collin County.

Harold "Hal" Colvin has filed to run for Frisco City Council's Place 4, ensuring that a municipal election will take place on May 11.

Colvin will run against incumbent candidate John Keating, who has served on the council since 2010. Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Cheney will be the de-facto winner of Place 2 as no candidates filed to run against him.

This won't be Colvin's first time in a City Council race, as he ran against Place 1 Council Member Bob Allen in 2009. In that race, Allen received 1,442 votes to Colvin's 193. Colvin is currently a member of the city's Housing Trust Fund Board, although his term expires on Sept. 30.

At a special City Council meeting held 5:15 p.m. March 1, council members voted to approve proposing polling contracts with both Collin County and Denton County for a joint election. The contracts were then formally approved at the council's regular meeting Tuesday.

City Secretary Jenny Page noted that, if it were to be held, the Frisco ISD board of trustees race would also be featured on the same ballot as the City Council race as a result of the joint election's approval, as would the race for Collin College board of trustees.

The approval calls for early voting to take place at Fire Station Nos. 4, 5 and 7 as well as Collin College Preston Ridge. During early voting, Denton County voters are free to vote anywhere in their county.

On Election Day, Precinct 1 is set to vote at Pioneer Heritage Middle School, Precinct 2 at Staley Middle School, Precinct 3 at Wester Middle School and Precinct 4 at Hicks Elementary School.

In addition to approval of polling locations, council members also voted to hold a special bond election on May 11.

That bond election will seek voter approval for the soon-to-be-built Fire Station No. 8. If passed, voters will allow $8 million worth of general obligation bonds to be used for the station's construction.

On the school side of Election Day, all three school board races only include one candidate.

That originally wasn't the case, as Greg Strange had filed to run for Place 1 but later withdrew that paperwork an hour before the filing deadline and instead filed for Place 3. On Monday, however, Strange had dropped out of the race altogether.

Now Place 3 will remain occupied by Dan Mossakowski, the board's vice president, and Place 1 will be taken by newcomer Bryan Dodson. The Place 1 seat is currently held by Brenda Polk, although she announced before the filing period began that she would not be seeking re-election.

No candidates filed to run against Renée Ehmke, the board's president, for the Place 2 seat.

As a result of Strange dropping out of the race, the school board will cancel its election at the next regular board meeting, which will take place in April.
