Two for 2: Voters to choose trustee for vacant Garland ISD board seat
By Monique Oaks, moaks@starlocalnews.com
After nearly a year without its full complement, the Garland ISD Board of Trustees will once again count seven members when voters choose either Charles Axe or Dwight Davis to fill Place 2 on Saturday, May 11.
Two members of the board - President Linda Griffin, Place 3, and Vice President Larry Glick, Place 1 - are running unopposed for their seats.
Axe and Davis, both Garland residents, have filed to run for the position vacated by Robert L. Harris in June 2012. Harris, an attorney, left the board when his job took him out of the state, said Chris Moore, GISD director of communications.
Harris' leaving presented the board with a "unique" situation, Moore said.
"If that vacancy had come open in years one or two, that would've been a mandatory election. There would have been no question," he said. "But because Robert vacated that spot within the last year of his final year on his term, [the board] did not have to have the mandatory election, and trustees elected to go ahead and serve as a team of six and save the district anywhere from [$75,000 to $90,000] to $100,000 to have an election for a spot that would've only been filled for one year - and then we would have had to have another election anyway.
"So that's why they went the route that they did," Moore said.
Axe ran against current Place 7 Trustee and Assistant Secretary Rick Lambert in the May 12, 2012, election. Davis is a program manager with Hewlett-Packard.
Board members are elected at-large to three-year terms, with no term limits, serving on a volunteer basis. Other trustees include Secretary Cindy Castaņeda and members Scott Luna and Steve Knagg. Combined, the group has 36 years of experience, according to garlandisd.net. Garland ISD serves Garland, Rowlett and Sachse.
The last day to register to vote in the May 11 joint election is April 11. For information, visit dallascountyvotes.org.
