10-4A BASEBALL: Pirates, Wranglers fall on opening day of district play

It was a rough start to the 10-4A season for the two Mesquite ISD teams.
Poteet was unable to keep pace with Carrollton Newman Smith in an 11-4 loss, while West Mesquite was done in by a big inning in a 9-3 setback to Carrollton Creekview.
Newman Smith used a five-run third inning to open a big lead on the Pirates. Poteet chipped away in the later innings to pull to within 7-3, but the Trojans tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
West Mesquite was in good position for much of the game to pull out a district-opening win and it looked like it had momentum after scoring twice in the fifth inning to tie the score at 3-3.
But Carrollton Creekview scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away for a 9-3 win.
Dre Williams had three hits and a run batted in for the Wranglers.
The 10-4A teams are scheduled to compete in tournament play later this week and resume district action on Tuesday when West Mesquite hosts Terrell at 7:30 p.m. at Tillery Field and Poteet travels to face Forney.
