10-4A BASEBALL WEEKEND ROUNDUP: West Mesquite, Poteet in search of winning ways

Published: Sunday, March 3, 2013 10:21 PM CST
Wins have been hard to come by for West Mesquite and Poteet so far this season.

That is dangerous news with the start of the 10-4A season slated to get going on Tuesday.

The Wranglers did notch their second win of the season on Saturday in the finale of the Mesquite ISD Crumpton Invitational.

West Mesquite (2-7) scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 12-2 rout of Roosevelt. Alejandro Gonzalez got the win, striking out five in three innings of work.

Several players had big days at the plate. Dre Williams had a double, two hits and two RBIs, as did Chris Rayson. Erik Ritchey, Mike Martinez and Robert Tovar also drove in a pair of runs.

The Wranglers had dropped a pair of close games on Friday.

West Mesquite led Frisco Heritage going into the final inning before Heritage rallied with four runs in its final at-bat to rally for an 8-5 victory. Williams had a RBI triple and Drake Malcom, Gonzalez and Tovar each added runs batted in.

The Wranglers faced a similar outcome in their other game, as Malcom, Tyren Wells and Ben Rivera drove in runs but it was not enough in an 8-4 loss to Skyline. West Mesquite outhit the Raiders, 8-5, but could not turn those into enough runs.

Poteet (1-7-2) could not find its offense through much of its weekend.

Poteet rapped out seven hits in each of its two games but was unable to push across any runs in losses to Jesuit (4-0) and Rockwall (7-0) at the Jesuit Classic.

Angel Rodriguez had two hits, including a double, but it again led to no scoring in a 2-0 loss to Burleson Centennial on Friday.

The Pirates' best chance for a win came on Saturday but they fell a bit short in a 5-4 loss to Plano West. Poteet trailed for the entire game, but scored four times in the sixth inning. Chase Coronado had a double and Matt Hecht had a three-run triple but the rally fell a run short.

The Pirates will open 10-4A play on Tuesday with a home game against Carrollton Newman Smith at Copeland Field. West Mesquite will be on the road for its district opener at Carrollton Creekview.
