12-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: Jaguars take down Skeeters for second time

Published: Wednesday, February 13, 2013 12:46 AM CST
Horn has been the riddle that Mesquite has been unable to solve this season.

Whle the Skeeters had already locked up the 12-5A championship and the top seed in next week's playoffs, they once again fell to the Jaguars on Tuesday, who eked out a 47-46 victory.

With that win, Horn moves into a tie for second place with Longview with a 9-3 record. Those two teams have the option of a coin flip or a play-in game to determine the second seed in the postseason.

Horn won the first meeting, 52-43, but it appeared the Skeeters were poised to gain a measure of revenge for much of the night.

Mesquite led 18-16 at halftime and then used a big 18-7 run to stretch the advantage to double digits.

But the Jaguars, who scored 23 points through the first three quarters, eclipsed that mark in the fourth quarter alone, outscoring the Skeeters 24-10 down the stretch.

Anthony Sharp was a big reason for the comeback, as he led all scorers with 30 points. Alex Cooper had 14 points and Rashard Higgins added 12 for Mesquite.

The Skeeters will face the winner of the play-in game between Naaman Forest and South Garland in the bi-district round of the playoffs next Monday or Tuesday.

Horn, pending its own tiebreaker, as well as those in 11-5A, can play either Rowlett, Naaman Forest or Sachse in the opening round.

North Mesquite finished its season on a high note, edging playoff-bound Tyler Lee for a 36-34 victory on Tuesday.

It was a defensive grind, but the Stallions were able to open a 19-14 halftime lead and make it stand up until the end.

Drick Whitted and Mike Williams each had 11 points to lead the way for North Mesquite, while Taylor Tankersley scored 17 for the Red Raiders, who will be the fourth seed in the playoffs.

FRIDAY: Mesquite sews up outright district title

Longview had been itching for a chance to get back at Mesquite for weeks, but the Skeeters once again proved to be too much, pulling away late for a 59-54 victory on Friday.

The Skeeters trailed for much of the second and third quarters before rallying at the end. Higgins scored 16 points, Cooper added 12 and Dejohn Shealy chipped in with 11.

Horn took care of winless Rockwall on Friday in a 62-51 victory. The Jaguars outscored the Yellow Jackets 22-12 in the second period and that proved to be the difference.

Zach Charles and Sharp each scored 17 points, while Adrian Chevis was also in double figures with 15.

Jaylon Veasley had 15 points and Aaron Maxwell scored 11 for Rockwall.

North Mesquite bounced back from a tough week with a 70-58 win against Rockwall-Heath. Whitted scored 19 points and Leslie Davis tallied 13 as the Stallions led early and scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Taylor Zivney had 24 points and Jackson Zivney added 14 for the Hawks.
