12-5A BOYS SOCCER: Stallions surge into second place

North Mesquite did exactly what it needed to on Friday night.
The Stallions got a pair of goals from Juan Mendez and another score from Oscar Ocampo and that was just enough to hold off Longview for a 3-2 victory.
North Mesquite (6-2-1-0, 20 points) earns three crucial points with the win as it moves ahead of Longview (5-3-0-2, 17 points) in the battle for second place.
The Jaguars' playoff hopes got some help from Mesquite, though, as they picked up their first district win with a 3-1 victory over Tyler Lee.
Melvin Gutierrez tallied a hat trick, with assists going to Walter Cavazos, Alvaro Ollarzabal and Edgar Pineda.
That win allowed Horn (4-4-1-0, 14 points) to stay within a point of Tyler Lee (5-5-0-0, 15 points) in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot.
With the Red Raiders idle on Tuesday, the Jaguars can overtake them in the standings with a regulation win or shootout victory against Mesquite.
North Mesquite will try to solidify its hold on second place on Tuesday when it takes on last-place Rockwall-Heath.
