12-5A SOFTBALL: Skeeters, Jaguars remain undefeated

Published: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 12:30 AM CDT
The race for the 12-5A championship has been a two-team fight between Mesquite and Horn in recent years.

If the early results are any indication, it could come down to the Skeeters and Jaguars once again, as both picked up victories on Tuesday to remain undefeated in 12-5A play.

Mesquite's Lindy Kennedy threw a four-hit shutout as the Skeeters moved to 3-0 with a 4-0 blanking of Tyler Lee.

Kelsi Coleman and Monica Rodriguez each drove in runs as Mesquite scored single runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings.

Horn, meanwhile, broke out the big sticks in an 18-2 rout of North Mesquite. The Jaguars (2-0) had 10 hits and three of them left in the ballpark as Destiny Diaz and Morgan McCallum belted grand slams and Aubree Turbeville also went deep to make a winner out of Ashley Moore, who allowed just one hit.

It was the second time in a week that the Stallions (0-3) were roughed up by one of their crosstown rivals, as Mesquite posted a 10-0 win on Friday.

The game was close through three innings, but the Skeeters exploded for six runs in the fourth to pull away. Kennedy scattered three hits in five innings to earn the win on the mound.

Kennedy Curry had a pair of doubles and three RBIs, Lily Garza drove in three runs and Sonia Pena had two more runs batted in.

Adrianna Santos had two doubles for North Mesquite.

Horn had cruised to a 10-0 win over Longview in its district opener on Friday. Moore once again threw a one-hitter, McCallum homered and Miranda Dupree and Morgan Shanz added extra base hits.

Rockwall could be the team that crashes the party at the top, as they are the only other undefeated team.

The Yellow Jackets will have a chance to make a statement this week, as they host Horn on Wednesday and Mesquite on Tuesday.
