23-4A BOYS SOCCER: Velasquez leads Wranglers past North Forney
Published: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 1:48 AM CDT
West Mesquite senior Isai Velasquez has been one of the most proficient scorers in the area for the last three years.
But with a more talented cast around him, he has been able to defer to his teammates on many occasions this season.
On Tuesday, he handled the scoring load himself, tallying five goals in a 6-1 win over North Forney.
Diego Martinez also scored for the Wranglers, who remained perfect in 23-4A with a 9-0 record.
The performance was part of a big week for Velasquez, who also scored twice in West Mesquite's 6-0 win over Terrell on Friday.
Christian Becerra, Brandon Carillo, Omar Loera and Michael Espinoza also had goals in the win.
West Mesquite will play Kaufman on Friday before its showdown with Poteet on Tuesday. The Wranglers have a three-point lead on the Pirates by virtue of their win the first meeting, but Poteet, who was off on Tuesday, can force a tie with a regulation win.
