12-5A SOFTBALL: Rockwall-Heath outslugs Mesquite, hands Skeeters first district loss

Mesquite's offense did plenty to help win Thursday's 12-5A softball game.
The problem was, Rockwall-Heath's bats did a little more.
The Skeeters suffered their first loss in district play as the Hawks held off a late rally to post a 14-11 victory at the Mesquite Girls Softball Complex.
The Skeeters grabbed an early 2-0 advantage, but that was quickly erased when the Hawks erupted for nine runs in the top of the second inning.
Rockwall-Heath put the run rule in effect by opening a 12-2 lead going to the bottom of the fifth. But not only did Mesquite score twice to extend the game, they mounted a seven-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to turn a rout into a 12-11 contest.
However, the Hawks regained some breathing room with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and the Skeeters did not have another charge in them.
Sara McGuire had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs for Mesquite, while Lily Garza and Sonia Pena each added two runs batted in.
Rockwall-Heath got big games from Savannah Calhoun, who had a triple among her three hits and drove in four, and Ally Brandvold, who had a triple and three RBIs.
On Wednesday, North Mesquite slipped to 0-4 in 12-5A with a 10-0 loss to Longview. The Stallions were within 3-0 through three innings before the Lobos scored seven in the fourth and were able to close the game out in five.
Tiara Mickens, Cecelia Gonzales and Alesia Hernandez had the lone hits for North Mesquite.
