Baseball: Myers notches win in 5-5A opener, Jags seek 12th consecutive playoff appearance

Published: Friday, March 15, 2013 11:57 PM CDT
Flower Mound’s baseball team opened its District 5-5A campaign on a positive note Tuesday as the Jaguars topped Lewisville, 6-2.

Flower Mound (15-3, 1-0) scored at least one run in each of the first five innings and held the Farmers (10-5, 0-1) scoreless over that stretch.

Mackay Jacobsen got the Jags out to a solid start by driving in two runs in the first inning and Tim Millard later increased the lead with a solo home run. B.J. Myers earned the win for Flower Mound, facing two batters over the minimum during the first five innings before finishing a complete game.

“He had his fastball and his slider working,” said Danny Wallace, Flower Mound head coach. “He was outstanding for most of the game.”

Myers is joined by lefty Seth Jordan and Sean Wymer to form a strong rotation.

“We have a pretty deep staff,” Wallace said. “We have three good starters who can each get it up there and have all been throwing well. We also have three or four guys who have been throwing well out the pen but we haven’t totally filled out our roles so far.”

Bullpen pitchers include Kyle Johnston, Jett Meenach and Andrew Piccin.

The other half of the Jaguars battery sees Noah Hill at catcher.

“He’s a good defensive catcher,” Wallace said. “He really blocks and receives the ball well. Like a lot of sophomores, he can have his inconsistencies at the plate, but he still has a good on-base percentage.

Around the infield are Meenach and Mitch Andrews at first (with one typically at DH when not in the field), returner Jacobsen at second, brother Casey Jacobsen at shortstop and Millard at third.

The outfield features Taran Kilian in left, Connor Wanhanen in center and Austin Musacchio in right.

“We have a couple of other guys we’ve been using at times,” Wallace said. “We’re pretty solid in the field, but we can always get better. We have some inexperience at a few spots and have made mistakes, but our defense has only really cost us one game. And I really like the speed we have in the outfield.”

At the plate, Flower Mound has been scoring well, averaging more than seven runs over their last six games.

“We’ve been very productive and we’ve seen all types of pitchers,” Wallace said. “We’ve seen hard throwers, soft lefties and guys with good breaking balls, but we’ve managed to score regardless.”

So far, Wanhanen and Musacchio have been pacing the Jaguars.

“Connor has been phenomenal in the 3-hole,” Wallace said. “And Austin has been very good too. He leads the team in quality at-bats and can really stir things up.”

Wallace added the Jaguars have been productive throughout the order.

“We have some guys that can bang,” he said. “And we have plenty of speed at the top. We’re going to be aggressive and will push the envelope on the bases. We’re doing a good job of manufacturing runs but we have enough guys who can leave the yard.”

As is the case each season, Flower Mound has set its sites on claiming the District 5-5A title.

“That won’t ever change,” Wallace said. “But it’s a tough district and I expect a dogfight until the very last Saturday.”

The Jaguars continued Friday against Coppell and will conclude the first round of district next week with games Tuesday at Hebron, Friday at Marcus and Saturday against Denton Ryan.

“It’s coming along quickly,” Wallace said.
