Girls soccer: Filling the void: Lady Jags earn draw despite absence of key players

Published: Friday, March 8, 2013 6:28 PM CST
By earning a draw Tuesday against District 5-5A foe Coppell, 1-1, Flower Mound's girls soccer team moved one step closer to securing a playoff spot and is still in the hunt for a district title.

The Lady Jaguars (4-2-1) are tied with Hebron for second behind Marcus (6-1) but are safely in front of fifth-place Lewisville (1-5-1).

Flower Mound still has a crack at the Lady Marauders - ranked No. 6 in the nation by the Elite Soccer Report - as the squads will square off March 19 following 11 days off for Spring Break.

"We're going to use that time off to rest and recuperate," said Trina Hamner, Flower Mound head coach. "The girls already play so much soccer and play a lot outside of school, I think it's good to have some time to spend with family and to refocus and get ready for the playoffs."

On Tuesday, Shelby Wilson got the Lady Jaguars on the board in the first half but Flower Mound couldn't contain the lead as the Cowgirls netted the equalizer midway through the second half.

"I thought both teams played pretty well," Hamner said. "The match really could have gone either way. We had some chances late, but so did they. Both teams were really going at it trying to get the win."

Hamner was particularly pleased with the effort defensively given the Lady Jaguars were without starting keeper Jordan Anderson, who previously injured her hand competing in a volleyball tournament, as well as defender Kennedy Miller.

Madison James started in relief for Flower Mound but had to leave after picking up a yellow card for making contact outside of the box. James gave way to Caitlin McCarrell, who closed out the match.

"Madison did a great job," Hamner said. "And Caitlin came in and did a good job in the second half. She had some big stops. It was nice to see both of them step up."

Hamner was also pleased with Flower Mound's ability to control possession.

"We really moved well as a unit," she added.

Last Friday, Flower Mound secured a 3-0 result over Lewisville, receiving goals from Wilson, Emma Heckendorn and Hannah Joseph.

The Lady Jaguars took on Hebron Friday (results not available as of press time) before entering Spring Break.

The Lady Farmers, meanwhile, followed with a 2-0 loss Tuesday against Marcus. The Lady Marauders received goals from Dani Murphy and Bailey Mitchell.

Natalie Schmutz also had a productive week for Marcus, scoring both goals last Friday in a shutout win against Denton Ryan.

On the boys side, Marcus earned a pair of wins by topping Ryan last Friday, 5-0, and Lewisville Tuesday, 2-0.

Goal-scorers were Blake Barnes, Tyler Mouton, Haiden Stiles, Alex Totillo and Victor Villareal against the Raiders, and Totilo and Kyler Spraker against the Farmers.

Flower Mound kept itself in the playoff hunt by topping Lewisville last Friday, 3-0, behind goals from David Lee (2) and Camden Ridley. On Tuesday, the Jaguars lost to first-place Coppell, 4-0.
