WEB EXCLUSIVE: A Rose City Classic by any other name: Golden Grip enjoys sweet victories in Tyler

For as much as the Rose City Classic has become a staple of the gymnastics calendar, so has Golden Grip Gymnastics leaving the event with plenty of medals.
The Plano-based gym did so again after excelling in the seventh incarnation of the event, which was March 1-2 in Tyler.
As is often the case, Golden Grip was far from the biggest gym in competition, but was once again been one of the most efficient. For proof of that, look no further than Level 7 where the team's only two gymnasts (Hannah Guynn and Lucas resident Starr Hague) both won all-around medals. Guynn did so thanks to registering a personal best on the vault (9.2) while Hague won a bronze medal on the uneven bars (9.350).
That team was actually one person as Emily Scott competed in her first Level 9 meet and received an all-around medal with her best score coming on the vault (8.950).
Efficiency gave way to dominance for the Level 8 girls.
There, Megan Fitzgerald won the all-around competition with a cumulative score of 37.250. Fitzgerald's scores were buoyed by a gold medal-winning routine on the balance beam (9.2), silver on the vault (9.5), silver on the bars (9.2) and bronze on the floor exercise (9.350).
Planoite Arianna Patterson captured gold medals on the vault (9.550), bars (9.425) and floor (9.625). She added a silver to that haul after finishing in the all-around.
Multiple medals were brought home by Allen resident Layher Braley too. Competing in only two events after returning from a knee injury, Braley picked up bronze medals on the bars (9.10) and beam (9.05). That completed a 1-2-3 sweep for Golden Grip on the uneven bars.
"The girls have trained hard and it shows in their scores," said Evgueni Indioukov, Golden Grip head coach and owner. "They are in the perfect position for the state meets coming up."
The first of those is the Level 10 State Meet, set for Friday in Houston, with the Level 8 State Meet commencing precisely a week later in H-town.
