11-5A BASEBALL: Eagles win district opener, Mustangs improve to 2-0
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Rowlett and Sachse have gone in opposite directions so far this season. While the Eagles have struggled breaking in a new roster, the seasoned Mustangs have been enjoying far better times.
But when it comes to 11-5A play, both teams were on the same page on Tuesday, as they each posted district victories.
Rowlett (3-11-1), who had a bye on the opening day of the district season, pounded Garland in a 12-5 victory.
Luke Hamblin was the beneficiary of the offense, as he went six and one-third innings, striking out six.
Sachse (12-3-1) improved to 2-0 in 11-5A with a 7-1 win over Lakeview. Josh Lewis was in control on the mound, allowing only four hits and striking out eight on 107 pitches.
Eric Williams smacked a home run and drove in three runs, Blake Dean had a two-run double and Austin Dean and Jonathan Soberanes added RBIs.
The Eagles and Mustangs are scheduled to meet on Thursday at Sachse High School. Rowlett will then host South Garland on Tuesday while Sachse travels to face Garland.
WEEKEND
Sachse was coming off an impressive performance at the Highland Park Scotland Yard Classic last week, where they posted a 3-1 record.
The Mustangs opened the tournament with a 9-8 win over Belton on Thursday. Austin Dean, Jeremy Hadley and Blake Dean each drove in a pair of runs for Sachse, who held off a late Belton rally.
On Friday, Kyle Weatherly had two runs batted in and Sachse scored twice in the sixth inning to rally for a 6-5 win over Plano East.
The Mustangs split their two games on the final day of the event. After a 10-5 loss to Saginaw Boswell, they won a pitcher's duel against Denton Ryan, 2-1.
Weatherly and Soberanes each struck out six in three innings of work, while Hadley fanned the side in his one inning.
The Mustangs got runs batted in from Weatherly and Kent Myers in the first inning and the pitching staff made it stand up until the end.
Rowlett completed at the same event where it suffered a number of close losses.
After opening with a 6-1 loss to Rockwall, the Eagles were edged by Greenville, 8-7. Atnip homered, doubled and drove in five runs to pace the offense.
The Eagles dropped a 3-1 decision to Plano East early on Saturday and then fell just short in a 6-5 loss to Trinity Christian-Addison.
Led by big hits from Sean Moore and Nathan Kalldin, Rowlett was tied going to the seventh inning, but TCA was able to scratch out a run in their final at-bat.
