THURSDAY BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Sachse posts no-hitter; Horn, Mesquite, Sunnyvale roll

Published: Friday, March 1, 2013 2:32 PM CST
Area baseball teams returned to tournament action on Thursday and several got off to strong starts.

Sachse used three pitchers to combine on a no-hitter in a 5-1 victory over Wylie at the Wylie Tournament.

Kyle Weatherly started and struck out eight in four innings of work. Trevor Weitzman had a pair of Ks in his two innings and Erick Blue came on in the seventh to finish it out.

Sachse scored all of its runs in the first two innings. Blake Dean had a double and two RBIs, while Eric Williams, Reed Enna and Weatherly all added runs batted in.

Mesquite and Horn each started the MISD David Crumpton Invitational with a pair of victories.

The Skeeters got a triple from Daniel Ferra in a 6-3 win over Frisco Heritage and Carlos Chavez doubled to help a strong pitching performance by Grant French in a 5-1 victory over Ennis.

Horn's Clayton Youngman held the Duncanville bats quiet in a 6-3 victory. Later in the day, Jared Thompson and Brett Harryman doubled to lead a 14-attack as the Jaguars rolled over Bryan Adams, 14-2. Michael Floyd was the beneficiary of the offense, as he earned the win on the mound.

Fresh off winning the championship of its host tournament, Sunnyvale started the Highway 24 Tournament by blasting Lone Oak in a 17-0 win.

Eight of the Raiders' 12 hits went for extra bases as they scored seven runs in the second inning and six in the third. There were several offensive heroes. Ryan Cottingame belted a home run and had three RBis while Zander Thompson tripled and drove in three. Devin DeLeon, Jake Wilcox and Conner Mears each added two runs batted in.

That was plenty for Wilcox and Jimmie Henson, who combined to strike out nine while allowing only two hits in four innings.

Other teams were not as fortuante on Thursday.

Poteet rapped out seven hits in each of its two games but was unable to push across any runs in losses to Jesuit (4-0) and Rockwall (7-0) at the Jesuit Classic.

North Mesquite got a double from Bobby Albair, but hurt itself with six errors in a 15-2 loss to Royse City at the Crumpton Invitational. At the same event, a two-run home run by Mike Martinez was not enough for West Mesquite in an 18-3 loss to Berkner.

At the Flower Mound Showdown, Rowlett was unable to get its offense going in losses to Rockwall-Heath (7-1) and Flower Mound (8-0).
