Baseball: Double trouble: Miscues on double plays cost Coppell

Published: Tuesday, March 19, 2013 5:12 PM CDT
Seth Jordan tossed a complete game and Flower Mound broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Friday night as the Jaguars improved to 2-0 in District 5-5A with a 4-2 win over Coppell.

Casey Jacobsen led off the fifth with a double and came all the way around to score when the throw to second ended up in right field. Connor Wanhanen provided insurance later in the frame with an RBI triple.

"It was not a pretty game and I'm sure [Coppell] will tell you that too," said Danny Wallace, Flower Mound head coach. "But it was a very competitive game. We showed a lot of grit and to be 2-0 is great."

Jordan finished with eight strikeouts, with at least one in every inning, working around a leadoff double by Jeremy Mortensen in the top of the fifth to keep the game tied.

"[Jordan] used his experience at this level and has a lot of game experience," Wallace said. "He didn't have much, but he said 'I'm staying out there' and he toughed it out and got better late."

The Cowboys got on the board early, scoring in the top of the first when Mortensen singled and came around to score on an RBI double down the first-base line by Jackson Cramer.

Flower Mound had hits in each of the first three innings but saw a pair of runners of runners picked off at second base. The Jaguars, however, took advantage of a Coppell miscue in the bottom of the third to even the contest at 1-1 when a throw to first off a liner for a possible double play hit the Jaguars runner in the back and caromed away.

"We did what we do," Wallace said. "We're going to manufacture some runs here and there and wait for someone to hit a gap and run."

In the fourth, Coppell regained the lead on doubles from Matt Delaney and Trevor Inman. But again, the Jaguars responded with the help of a Cowboys error when Jett Meenach singled and later touched the plate on a throwing error while Coppell attempted another potential double play.

"Not turning the double play to stay in front, 2-1, was a huge play," said Kendall Clark, Coppell head coach. "The other one on the liner, sometimes that just happens. You can't do anything about that. But we had to turn the other to keep the lead, 2-1, and that changed the momentum."

Austin Gardner started on the mound for Coppell and was tagged with all four unearned runs.

"We made too many errors and didn't get a clutch hit when we needed to," Clark said. "We just didn't play good enough defense to win. It should cost you when you don't make the plays. When you're playing a team as good as Flower Mound, you can't give them extra outs and let them back in the game."
