Boys soccer: Cowboys claim key win over Marcus
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
In a battle between two of the top teams in the nation, Coppell got a leg up on the rest of District 5-5A by securing a 3-2 win over Marcus.
The Cowboys (3-0 in district and No. 7 in the nation) are now in sole possession of first ahead of the Marauders (2-1 and No. 11) and the rest of their district foes.
"Any time you can beat Marcus is big," said Chad Rakestraw, Coppell head coach. "They came in with only one loss and one tie, so they've been playing very well. But we were really motivated to play."
Goal-scorers for Coppell were Drake Lovelady, who also added an assist, Zanil Narsing and Justin Todd. Haiden Stiles and Alex Totilo posted goals for Marcus.
"It got a little tight at the end," Rakestraw said. "They had a lot of chances we were either able to head away or stop. They generated a lot of set pieces on us and the defense did a good job."
Last Tuesday, Coppell gave another solid effort in a 5-0 rout of Flower Mound.
The Cowboys led, 1-0, at halftime before pulling away in the final 40 minutes.
"We were clicking on all cylinders in the second half," Rakestraw said.
Justin Todd and Chris Madden scored two goals apiece, while Lovelady also scored and Kevin Tovson contributed an assist.
"Our defense is what really stood out though," Rakestraw added. "They only had two opportunities all game and we kept them out of our end almost the whole first half. Kellen Reid and Jacob Tucker did a great job."
Coppell continued last night against Denton Ryan (results not available as of press time) before closing the first half of district play at 7:30 p.m. at home Tuesday against Lewisville (No. 12).
