Sunnyvale picks up a pair of wins in non-district play
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Sunnyvale took a short break from 12-2A play during the last few days, but the results did not change.
The Raiders improved to 13-2 overall this season with a pair of victories over Wills Point on Tuesday and Lone Oak on Friday.
Nathan Hawkins was the star on Tuesday as he tossed a no-hitter in a 12-0 victory over Wills Point.
Wesley Phillips had a double, a triple and a run batted in, Ryan Cottingame and Zander Thompson each drove in three runs while Devin DeLeon added a pair of RBIs.
On Saturday, Sunnyvale used bookend big innings in a 13-4 win against Lone Oak.
The Raiders erupted for six runs in the first inning to take control. Lone Oak pushed across one run in the bottom of the second and it remained a 6-1 game until the sixth, when Sunnyvale put the game away with a seven-run outburst.
Four different Sunnyvale pitchers got work in the game, with starter Joey Rosato getting the win after striking out four in four innings.
Phillips had another big game with three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Jake Wilcox also had two hits and two runs batted in.
Last Friday, Sunnyvale scored eight runs in the first inning as it cruised to a 13-3 victory over Leonard to improve to 3-0 in 12-2A.
Leonard did try to counter with three runs in the second inning to cut into its deficit, but Sunnyvale added three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to close out the run-rule win.
Phillips pitched all five innings, striking out eight to earn the win. Thompson had three hits, including a double, with four RBIs. DeLeon had a triple and two runs batted in, Sam Shaver drove in a pair of runs and Wilcox had a two-run double.
Sunnyvale will return to district play this week and will try to maintain its perfect 12-2A record with home games against Gunter on Friday and Caddo Mills on Tuesday.
